The Pirates were so close to .500 this past week and then we ran into the Cubs. Within one game of .500 and now the losing continues, it just doesn’t seem like they can get over that hump, and with the Cubs coming up again soon again to quote Mike Lange, Look out Loretta, Elvis has just left the building.

2-0 going for the sweep

Well the Pirates seem to have hit a bit of luck the last few games, beating the Giants, and giving just a shadow of hope to the few fans in the stands. Its been the Nate & Nady show for the past month or so and it looks to continue today at 12:35 when the Pirates go for the sweep at PNC Park. I’m 32 so I remember the winning days, and if Bay can some how kick it into gear, this out field will start to resemble the Bonds, VanSlyke, & Bonilla connection, of the early 1990’s.  That team had a great 3,4,5 hitters that pitchers just couldn’t get around. Not that I’m getting my hopes up but it would be nice to have something to cheer for.

Yes thats right folks the team that has only won lets say 2 games this year made the Pirates their whipping boys. When in doubt bring the Pirates in town.  My son lost his first game 9-10 so if we lose monday I’m going to see if the Pirates can come over and give our kids a boost  so we can get a win to get them back on the winning track.

The bright side of the gloom and doom, was Freddie getting back into the swing with a homerun, and Ryan keep going with his hitting with a homerun too. Everyone just needs to cross their fingers tonight that the Pirates win If the Pirates win tonight, it will be the 9,400th victory in franchise history, but the loses are starting to add close that too.

13-1

What change that is for once, the Pirates on the winning side of a blow out. This win brnigs us back to 11-16 only 5 games under .500, not that I’m saying this is good but it could be worse. One of the upsetting items to me is Bixler, for the the hype that was thought of him in AAA, he’s not showing anything here. You’ve got a 36 year old starting at shortshop over a young guy trying to make a name for himself. The pirates are in last place in the division but can jump to 4th with Houston and the Reds losing and are only 6 games back from a wildcard spot. Its May 1 do you know where your Pittsburgh Pirates stand?

Well the Pirates win, and yet lose another item on what was suppose to be a key member of the staff. A member of the picking staff that was suppose help these young kids and bring them forward. I do think it was the other way around,  Morris forgot how to win when he came here. He got pulled into the funk that is the Pittsburgh Pirates 15 years or losing. Nutting said that spending $10 million on this player was the only way to get a player in town without over paying him. Meaning that NO ONE WANTS TO COME HERE EVER.

Well we have to pay him the rest of the season unless someone picks up his contract and then the Pirates will get off a bit of paying his salary, but look for the Pirates to keep the salary low next year to make up for losing this large chunk of change this year. But if they Pirates keep winning while they release a player, lets make this a regular thing.

Almost a lose

Being sick I’ve been able to check out some games, read some stats, and study up on the bucco’s. I’ve got 2 posts that are done, but now they have won a few again, I’m not sure if they would be good reading. I have one about the error streak vs McLouth’s hitting streak that I’m sure will be posted, it’s not every day you do have something nice to see about the team or someone on it. I started off watching the game last night but then had to go to a meeting for the baseball coaches for my son’s opening season starting saturday, of course the Pirates gave the Cards a 4 run lead in the first inning, so most of us in the meeting didn’t seem to care to finish up early and go watch the rest of the game. But they did it, they almost lost it again but pulled it out in the end. I’ll give the Pirates their due, when they are bad, its bad, but when they almost try, its tollerable to watch for the most part.

Pirates are worth how little?

Forbes.com just released the net worth  of the MLB teams and our Pittsburgh Pirates are 28th over at $292 Million dollars,  the opposite of the New York Yankees at #1 coming at a whopping $1.3 Billion, yes that Billion with a B folks. Bob Nutting bought the team in 1996 for $92 million dollars. The Forbes site as seen here. This site has breakdowns for wins per dollar and amount of money the make every year with charts. It’s a very interesting read.

Fun while it lasted

Tick-Tac-Toe four in a row, it was fun while it lasted. The luck of the of the Jolly Roger looks like it has wore out Game one in LA, a 11-2 blowout. Game 2 an 8-1 fundamental break down. What can I say, grown men in their late 20’s and early 30’s need to go home, sit down real close to the field and watch a little league team. I coach my son’s 7-8 year team, and I tell them go home and watch a game for homework, I’m really considering not saying that anymore. When you have players dropping balls; trying to flip the ball over to the pitcher at 1st base, and just totally botching it come one.

LaRoche, you wonder why team management didn’t want to work out a long term deal there you go, take g good long look in the mirror bud, your batting .143, with 3 RBI’s, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t 1st Base suppose to be a semi power position.  All in favor or bringing Bonds back to just stand on the bag and hit 25 home runs a year gimpy leg and all raise your hands.

Jose Bautista I like the guy, don’t get me wrong, but again what’s with the tag, or better yet, the lack there of. Come on man just tag the runner and he’s out, I’m sure that’s how they do it in the Dominican league. Watching a game at times is like watching the 3 stooges or keystone cops, my son goes dad, wasn’t he suppose to do this or do that, and I’m like yes, yes he was and just shake my head, and yell at the TV.

So if anyone reading this can get this post to any pirate player please do, my son’s team has 4 clock game on the 24 of May when you guys get back from the road swing, please come to Wintersville Ohio, and get a refresher course from some people who really know how to play first and second graders.

All you can eat, except on days that count.

So you’ve come to the ballpark to eat all you can, well you better make sure you do it on a weekday, because if you go to a game on Friday or Saturday you better bring your wallet, ATM card, or a mini loan from your bank. That’s right the All you can eat seats are off limits during what was called “Peak Time”. This information comes from a worker who did not want to give out his or her name, which I totally respect. “Why would we do all the food you can eat when we have busy games, we would lose money the section would be totally full, and that’s just not good business sense.

I went to the game fully intending on getting the inside scoop from fan sitting in that section. Taking my PDA for voice recorder for possible podcasting, digital camera for photos and video taping. The doors opened right on time and I made my way through the gates and to the left field bleachers to get a good look at the stadium. After a minute of staring and awe, my eyes were transfigured on the right field stands I wanted to see who would & how many people would be sitting there during the game, after all it’s just next to the right foul pole, and there has to be a good chance to catch a ball or two.

From the first pitch to the last out, I watched the game, and kept looking over at the stands, no one, not one person bought a ticket for that section. For the life of me I can’t figure out why. If you’re not into trying to catch a ball, the spot is great for having young kids, your just literally stops from the mini kid’s playground. Families can take their little ones over there between innings or before the game to run some energy out of them so to better enjoy the game. Well let’s see judging by my photo’s you can see that the Pirates front office won’t even market the empty section for families to sit in during the weekends when you have most of that type of customers are the park then.

So after looking at my photo’s again, I do believe the Pirates have again come up empty, they could market to families in that section during the weekend, or even the weekdays, offer the All you can Eat for a different price for kids under a certain age, or offer a 4 pack of All you Can Eat tickets for say $80. As a father I know my seven year old son likes to eat at games, and when he wants cotton candy or ice cream I have to find money or tell him we have to wait between innings, if he had a kids pass he could take a few steps behind me and get what he wants while I could still enjoy the action of the game while I’m able to keep an eye on him. I really don’t see a child under the age of 12 or 13 eating his or her weight in burgers, & nacho’s to have to pay an extra $30 for a ticket and that is where the Pirates screw up and do the bare minimum to make fans happy, both on and off the field.
